Breast Surgery

Operations are usually arranged within a short time frame and all procedures are discussed with the patient in detail in the clinic beforehand.

These operations include removal of benign breast lumps, wide local excision of malignant lumps with preservation of the breast or removal of the breast – called mastectomy.

If mastectomy is recommended, breast reconstruction is discussed and if appropriate carried out either immediately or as a delayed procedure in conjunction with a plastic surgeon.

Sentinel Node Biopsy:

Malignant tumours can spread to the lymph nodes under the arm and it is important to know if this has happened. Mr McPherson has been certified and fully audited by the College of Surgeons to carry out this new procedure which involves removing only one or two lymph nodes rather than the majority. This is not suitable for every patient. If it is appropriate, we carry out a special scan prior to surgery and injection of blue dye into the breast at the time of operation.
